Washed coco coir and low EC cocopeat
Washing removes soluble salts. Electrical conductivity, or EC, measures the conductivity of an extract and helps assess its total dissolved salts. A low result must be tied to an extraction method and sample condition. It does not, by itself, establish that coir has been buffered.
What does buffered coco coir mean?
Buffering conditions coir’s cation exchange sites, commonly using calcium-based treatment. It addresses ion exchange as well as soluble salts. Ask the supplier to state the treatment and supporting analysis rather than judging buffering from a single EC value. Select the grade with your agronomist and water analysis.
Compare methods before comparing numbers

Match chemistry and physical structure
Agree pH alongside EC, and consider irrigation-water alkalinity. Specify particle fractions, long fibre, moisture and the volume measurement method. Fine-screened nursery media and a chips-containing slab can have different physical requirements even when their EC readings are similar.
