1. Check the product and working space

Confirm the batch, material grade, treatment and expected expansion. Teral’s 5 kg block range includes nominal 65–75 L and 90–100 L options. Choose a vessel with additional working space above the expected volume. Keep the media and tools clear of soil and other contamination.

2. Hydrate progressively

Use water of known quality and follow the supplier’s preparation instructions. Add water in stages, allowing absorption before adding more. Record the total amount used. Water requirement and soaking time depend on the block and starting conditions; a single fixed number is not provided for every grade.

3. Check the core and loosen evenly

The surface may soften before the centre. Allow hydration to reach the core, then gently separate the softened material until dry lumps have disappeared. Avoid forcing or compacting the media. Evaluate moisture against the agreed preparation method rather than relying only on appearance.

4. Measure expansion consistently

Use a known-volume container and a repeatable filling procedure. Record settling, drainage and compaction conditions. A heaped volume and a settled volume are not equivalent. See litres per 5 kg block and moisture versus dry-matter weight.

5. Verify readiness for your application

Check EC and pH using the agreed test method. Hydration does not turn untreated coir into buffered coir. Review the treatment grade and your crop’s requirements before planting or blending.

Preparing compressed grow bags

Place grow bags in their final support and follow the agreed hydration and drainage sequence for that slab. Check expansion along the full length and match the planting opening to the propagation format. Confirm the starting irrigation solution with your agronomist; do not automatically apply a universal nutrient or buffering dose.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a 5 kg cocopeat block need?

Follow the instructions for the specific grade and record the water used. Initial moisture, material structure and intended final moisture affect the amount required.

How do I know hydration is complete?

Check that the centre has softened and the media loosens evenly without dry lumps. Compare the recovered volume using the agreed procedure.
