What does the latest Canadian peat report say?

The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association’s 17 September 2026 report says rainy weather held several regions below expected extraction levels. It also says careful inventory management should allow producers to meet their partners’ needs.

For example, the report lists Alberta at 56% and Ontario at 90% of expected extraction. Its definition of “actual extraction” includes output achieved by 31 August plus output reasonably expected for the remainder of the season under normal conditions. These percentages are not a measure of stock already available for sale.

The association is a producer-industry source, and the report concerns Canada. It does not quantify global spare peat capacity or promise enough extra supply to replace world cocopeat demand. Meeting established partners’ needs is a different claim from absorbing a sudden new wave of orders.

Why a one-for-one switch needs a growing trial

University of Florida IFAS guidance describes differences among hydroponic media in water holding, aeration and chemical properties. Peat is commonly acidic and may be difficult to rewet after drying; a formulated peat-based substrate can therefore require different management from the coir product it replaces.

Teral’s interpretation: qualify the finished alternative, not just the raw-material name. Compare the supplied formulation, container filling, irrigation response and crop performance. A successful peat-based nursery mix does not automatically validate the same material in a commercial coir slab system.

Use the same crop stage and container design for a side-by-side trial. Record any changes to irrigation, nutrition or preparation. Ask your crop adviser to define the acceptance criteria before expanding the trial.

Three tests for whether substitution is realistic

Evaluate product, availability and economics separately
TestEvidence you need
Agronomic fitA suitable formulation and recorded crop trial in the intended system
Supply commitmentConfirmed grade, volume, delivery window and repeat-order availability
Delivered economicsComparable usable volume, transport scope and preparation costs

A supplier may offer a technically suitable sample but have limited allocation for your order. Another may offer volume immediately but in a grade that has not been tested for your application. Do not merge these two kinds of approval.

Similarly, a shorter transport distance does not by itself prove a lower cost per filled pot. Obtain comparable delivered quotations and include the labour or process changes needed to use the material.

What should growers expect for 2027?

There is no verified global demand-and-capacity balance in the sources reviewed that supports a definite yes or no for all cocopeat replacement. A more useful planning assumption is that availability will need to be confirmed by grade, region and supplier.

Consider three options: maintain the current coir specification with a better delivery buffer; qualify an alternative formulation for selected applications; or approve more than one substrate before the next production cycle. These are procurement choices, not predictions that either peat or coir will become unavailable.

Ask suppliers what volume they can commit to and which assumptions underpin that commitment. Revisit the answer when harvest information, freight routes or your own crop programme changes.

Build a qualified backup before you need it

Retain the sample code, specification and trial record for any backup medium. Define the smallest practical commercial trial and agree who approves a wider change. Keep sufficient time for the trial to answer the crop question that matters, rather than only whether the bag can be filled.

Our cocopeat versus peat moss comparison covers sample selection. The 2027 El Niño outlook adds the climate questions to include when discussing future supply. Teral’s loose-media range can be a starting point for a coir formulation enquiry.
