Why do tomatoes ripen unevenly in coir?

Separate normal differences in fruit maturity from persistent hard green or yellow shoulders. Keep cultivar and climate records with the fruit samples.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Nutrition and water management in coir matter, but fruit exposure and cultivar also influence ripening.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare fruit of the same cultivar and maturity stage.
  2. Record whether shoulders remain hard while the rest of the fruit colours.
  3. Review canopy exposure and recent crop nutrition results rather than guessing a deficiency.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is uneven?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Fruit within a truss

Check flowering order and picking stage before treating normal maturity variation.

Hard shoulders remain

Discuss a ripening disorder with the crop adviser, using cultivar and climate records.

Whole plant ripens slowly

Review crop load, light and temperature together before increasing feed.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Keep representative fruit photographs and harvest dates for a cultivar-specific review.

Keep in mind

Do not use stronger fertiliser as a universal ripening treatment.
