Feed & EC · WITH DRIP

Why do my cocopeat EC readings differ?

First compare the test methods, then compare the numbers. A supplier’s extraction result and drainage from a fertigated crop describe different samples.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

EC indicates dissolved salts, not which nutrients or unwanted ions are present. Fertiliser, source water, crop uptake and sampling conditions can all influence a coir result.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Write down whether the sample is source water, feed, routine drainage, a standardised PourThru sample or a laboratory extract.
  2. Record the extraction ratio, units and meter calibration. EC in mS/cm is not the same label as ppm.
  3. Sample consistently and follow the trend. Use interpretation limits for the crop and the exact method.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What differs between the readings?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Different extraction methods

Keep the results separate. Re-test with the same validated method; do not multiply 1:5 by a simple ratio to predict 1:1.5.

One meter shows ppm

Find the meter’s conversion scale or switch both meters to EC. Calculated ppm values can differ even for the same solution.

Same method, rising trend

Verify calibration and repeat representative samples. Review feed, water quality and irrigation with your adviser before changing the nutrient programme.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Make a short log: sample type, method, date, EC unit, pH and irrigation timing.

Keep in mind

Do not diagnose a specific deficiency, sodium level or buffering quality from EC alone.
