How should tomato fruit load be managed in growbags?

Match retained fruit to the cultivar, season and plant strength. A truss-load decision should be made from the whole plant, not bag volume alone.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

The root zone supports the crop’s water and nutrient demand but does not define a universal fruit count.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare stem growth, leaf development and successive truss size.
  2. Track marketable fruit size alongside retained fruit numbers.
  3. Check whether weak plants also have delivery or root problems.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is the crop showing?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Smaller fruit on successive trusses

Review crop load and light with the production adviser before selecting a thinning programme.

Uneven plants in one row

Investigate root-zone and water-delivery differences before imposing one thinning decision.

Balanced growth and target size

Maintain records rather than changing fruit load solely to chase a higher count.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Record retained fruit and marketable size on a small tagged group through several trusses.

Keep in mind

Do not copy a fruit-per-truss rule from another cultivar or season.
