Crop guides · WITH TOM

How high should a grafted tomato sit in cocopeat?

Check the graft union and transplant supplier’s instructions before positioning the plant. Rootstock benefits depend on preserving the intended graft relationship.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Coir can settle after hydration, changing the planting level around the stem.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Locate the graft union before planting and mark its position relative to the expanded medium.
  2. Check whether the root plug is supported without burying the stem above the specified level.
  3. Reinspect after the first irrigations for settling and roots forming from the scion.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What changed after planting?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Union remains above the medium

Maintain the planting position and monitor support as the plant develops.

Medium touches the union

Ask the transplant supplier how to correct the planting level without damaging established roots.

Roots appear above the union

Record their position and seek advice before removing roots or changing the stem depth.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Photograph the union and medium level on representative plants and confirm the nursery’s planting guidance.

Keep in mind

Do not use deep planting rules for ungrafted tomatoes automatically on grafted plants.
