What should I check when leaf edges burn in a coir crop?

Leaf-edge damage has several possible causes. Establish the pattern and recent changes before deciding that the plant needs more or less fertiliser.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Root-zone salts, moisture stress and environmental injury can produce overlapping symptoms in plants grown in coir.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare old and new leaves and note whether damage is symmetrical.
  2. Review recent feed, spray, heat and irrigation events.
  3. Check roots and consistent pH/EC records rather than one isolated reading.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

When did damage appear?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

After a spray application

Review the application record and seek crop-specific advice on possible injury.

Alongside a rising salt trend

Confirm the test method and calibration, then review the nutrient and water programme.

After a hot or dry event

Assess moisture distribution and exposure before changing the fertiliser recipe.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Photograph fresh damage and record its timing so a crop adviser can compare plausible causes.

Keep in mind

Do not diagnose a specific nutrient deficiency from brown margins alone.
