Coir & preparation · WITH COBY

Why are fine coir particles collecting at the bottom?

Check whether the material was already layered at filling or has moved during handling. A fine layer can behave differently from the rest of the profile.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Particle distribution affects pore spaces. Screening, mixing and placement all influence the physical structure roots experience in a container.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Inspect an unused sample and a filled container side by side.
  2. Look for separation caused by repeated pouring or vibration.
  3. Check whether drainage outlets retain fines or allow material loss.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

Where does the fine layer appear?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Present in unused material

Review the physical grade and mixing instructions with the supplier. Assess a representative sample rather than one handful.

Appears only after filling

Observe the handling process for segregation. Trial a consistent mixing and filling method.

Develops during the crop

Inspect outlet design and media movement before assuming the substrate has chemically changed. Record the timing.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Keep a labelled sample and a cross-section photo for a physical-grade discussion.

Keep in mind

Do not infer salt content or buffering quality from the amount of visible dust.
