Coir & preparation · WITH COBY

What should I do with hard pieces inside expanded cocopeat?

Check whether the pieces are compressed coir, chips or foreign material. Their identity determines the next step.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Compression can leave areas needing more hydration, while some grades intentionally contain coarse particles. An expansion problem and a grade mismatch require different responses.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Inspect a representative piece without crushing it into the crop.
  2. Check the hydration instructions and time allowed for expansion.
  3. Compare the pieces with the declared particle grade and a retained sample.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What does the piece look like?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Compressed pith that softens in water

Review hydration uniformity and allow preparation to finish before filling or planting.

Recognisable firm husk chips

Compare with the specified blend. Chips are not necessarily evidence of incomplete expansion.

Unidentified material

Set the material aside and contact the supplier with photographs and batch details before use.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Resolve identity and preparation before distributing the batch across planted containers.

Keep in mind

Do not mechanically grind every hard piece and assume the physical grade remains unchanged.
