Coir & preparation · WITH COCOA

How evenly should cocopeat nursery cells be filled?

Consistent filling gives each seedling a comparable starting root zone. Look for both empty pockets and overcompressed cells.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Coir particle size, moisture at filling and handling influence the usable cell volume.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Inspect cells from the centre and edges of a filled tray.
  2. Compare fill depth and firmness without crushing the media.
  3. Check for long fibres bridging small cells or obstructing filling equipment.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What is inconsistent?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Cells contain voids

Review feed flow and filling technique, then inspect a fresh tray.

Some cells are tightly packed

Standardise handling pressure and assess water behaviour before sowing.

Fibres bridge narrow cells

Discuss a suitably screened nursery grade with the substrate supplier.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Retain a reference tray and a simple filling standard for the nursery team.

Keep in mind

Do not assume the same fill technique suits every cell size and coir grade.
