How do I check for air gaps around a planted root plug?

Inspect plug-to-medium contact gently. A plant can wilt even when surrounding coir is moist if its original root plug is poorly connected to that moisture.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

The plug and coir may have different structures. Good placement supports contact without squeezing the plug or compacting the whole container.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Compare moisture within the original plug and beside it.
  2. Look for visible cavities or a planting hole larger than the plug.
  3. Check whether the plant moves loosely when supported gently.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

What do you find?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Plug is dry, surrounding coir moist

Review contact and initial establishment with the crop adviser. Check the plug directly after correcting placement.

Visible cavity around the plug

Restore suitable contact carefully without burying the crown or crushing the plug.

Contact is good but wilting continues

Investigate roots, climate and plant condition. Do not keep pressing the medium as the only response.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Inspect a few representative plants soon after transplanting and record placement problems.

Keep in mind

Do not judge establishment solely from the moisture of the outer container.
