How do I transition blueberry plants into a coir blend?

Pay attention to the original nursery root ball as well as the surrounding substrate. Different media may wet and dry differently during establishment.

THE COCOPEAT CONNECTION

Why the root zone matters

Water movement between a nursery plug and coir can be uneven until roots establish.

01 / OBSERVE

Three checks before you change anything

  1. Identify the nursery medium and its current moisture condition.
  2. Check the interface between the root ball and new substrate after watering.
  3. Monitor new root growth and foliage response on representative plants.

02 / NARROW IT DOWN

Where is moisture uneven?

Choose the closest observation for a suggested next check.

Original root ball remains dry

Review placement of water delivery and the nursery’s transplant instructions.

New medium stays much wetter

Assess delivery and container drainage while protecting the original roots from drying.

Both wet evenly

Continue establishment observations before changing the blend or programme.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Leave with something useful

Compare the original root ball and surrounding medium during several establishment checks.

Keep in mind

Do not assume a wet container surface proves the nursery root ball is hydrated.
